Lost Coast Trail Run Memorial Day Weekend

Bring the ZJ, it needs some mud time!

Mark is the only one camping, what a bunch of wussies!

So there is just a bunch of mud, no deep water crossings, or large rocks to navigate? I guess I could bring the zj then. I had a 95' zj before with a 3" lift and 31" at's and showed some yj's with 4" lift and 33" tires how wheeling is done. It was not extreme stuff around Grass Valley along a river (Red Dog run I think it was called). Anyways a fairly stock zj or xj can many times can outwheel a fairly stock/slightly modified yj/cj. I saw how far Garberville is from my home in Citrus Heights (Sac) so I'm going to go with the zj for more creature comforts, better gas mileage, and it's much more streetable than my xj on 35's with a detroit in the back. So we're meeting up at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant at 9 on sunday the 30th in Garberville. If so, I'll see you guys there. I talked my wife into going on the trip instead of to Monterey being that this is our 5 yr anniversary and we had out honeymoon in that area. :D I'm bad I know. It's cool to get some mild wheeling in along with taking in this nice area.

Two years ago, bone stock 1 week off the lot, no hooks, no skids, no anything. Very mild trail, only used 4wd (and I think I was the only one who did) on a short muddy grade about 100 yds long. It is scenic and a good faamily run with lunch at the beach.

Sorry Mark I'm out this year. Jeep's not ready, 3:55's in front and 4:88's rear. :rattle:

Come On Neil! You know you don’t even need 4WD for this run.:nono:

I'm trying to find a legitimate way to wimp out. The real reason is I'm going to Reno on the 17-20 of June and plan to be not only broke but possably indebted to Guido the loan shark by the time I come home.

That cool Neil wuss :) I’ll catch you another time.

Looks like my group is swelling. My fiancés friend is coming and a friend of hers with his stock TJ or YJ

Well, looks like that time is approaching! I'm looking foward to hosting another fun Lost Coast Trail run this year. It'll be great meeting new folks, and catching up with old friends. I'm also glad to see the good turn out of Sierra Chapter members, and their guests... the more the merrier!

The weather has been cooperating for the most part. We had some good rain about a week ago, and the forecast for later this week (Thurs/Fri) calls for about a 40% chance of showers. This would be good as it would keep the dust down on the trail, and make for some fun muddy (but tame) sections. The day of the run calls for partly cloudy conditions. All in all, I don't anticipate any hassles on the trail. For those of you not use to the climate here, it can be on the cool side particulary if it's overcast, so be prepared.

If anyone has any last minute questions, please post here, or PM me. I'll see you all on Sunday at 9:00 am across from the Waterwheel Restaurant in Garberville... just look for the XJ's parked along the street.

Do you think I will need front tow hooks on my zj to make the trip? I don't have any, but I do have a rear hitch with a tow cleavis. Where is everyone staying? I'm calling the Best Western in Garberville tonight. I wonder how $$$ it will be for this weekend? They could charge a premium considering how many people might be traveling.
Troy

Troy,
You probably won't need tow hooks, I didn't have them or a hitch the time I went through. The mud was deep, but not killer deep.

I am staying at a camp ground with my sister (read my previous posts). This is Memorial Day weekend, folks from the Bay Area will be going up taking up the spots and available rooms, get reservations NOW. Didn't have any reservations and ended up driving all the way to Scotia to find a room.

This is a really scenic and fun family ride.

See you there,
Tom

Yeah, I know I was going to call in this weekend, but it didn't happen. This is my wife and my 5th yr anniversary as well so I had to make sure it was o.k with here. We had our honeymoon up here so it is the 1st time we have been back to the area. We are from Wisconsin/Illinois respectively, but we got married in Santa Rosa, lived out there for 2 yrs then moved back to Chicago with my parents. I finished college & we both saved $ to get our house in Citrus Heights (Sac) now we are ready to see the North Coast again. Hopefully I can get a room. I'm leaving my beastly xj home in favor of my bone stock zj. I cannot afford the gas prices and want to drive in comfort. See you guys there Sunday morning. My zj is a white 98' laredo with 5 star stock rims.

Ah, Newlyweds.....Today is my 24th anniversary and we went on USAL road for our anniversary two years ago. XJ is still riding stock, but now has skids and recovery points.

Wow I guess my wife and i will not be the only ones with an anniversary within the week. I secured a room at the Best Western in Garberville for the 29th & 30th. I hear the trail dumps us out close to Ft. Bragg so we'll then be coming back up the coast north back to Garberville and taking in Ave of the Giants, etc in the Redwoods. My wife and I had our honeymoon in the Redwoods and haven't been back since, this is our 5th yr anniversary so it is time we return. Does this run always happen on Memorial Day weekend? Maybe we can make the trip an annual thing? It is nice to see some green vegetation, cool weather, and some ocean when you live in Sacramento/Central Valley. I would like to see an overcast & cool day. Heah after seeing sun for months on end, change is good. I'm originally from Chicago so I'm used to variety.

Last year we stopped at Ft Bragg and stayed a coupple of days. We charted a fishing boat and did a little salmon fishing. Lots of fun.

Come on the Rubicon run instead, you will have alot more fun than gambling and handing the casino your hard earned money. I rather have fun on the trail, and if I break something at least it was for a good cause.

Did you get your rooms at the Best Western in Garberville. I just secured a room for Sat & Sun night there. When are you heading up? I'm going to try to get out of Sac early Sat by 8 or so. It is a 4-1/2 trip according to mapquest 253 miles each way. I live in Citrus Heights, I see you live in CP. I don't know if I can but maybe we can caravan up there. It is quite a long way though and we might get split up. I'm driving my stock white 98' grand cherokee laredo so I should be going pretty fast with my small tires. If we don't go up together I'll see you guys at the hotel. How much was your room? I paid $92 for a king size bed. It was a little more than I thought, but it is a nice area and my wife & my 5th yr anniversary. The lady said that there is an outdoor heated pool and hot tub and continental bf, etc.
Troy

Sorry to take so long to reply. Life gets nuts. My plan is to head over Friday night and camp at Richardson's Grove Friday and Saturday nights. I’ll see you in Garberville Sunday morning.

What’s the weather lookin like Ivan?

Yeah, I can't really expect the wife to want to camp out on our 5th yr anniversary. She was good enough to agree that we come on the Lost Coast run and then see the sights after that. We were thinking at 1st of spending the weekend in Monterey, but we were just there with my folks who visited from Chicago about a month ago. It is a nice area, but I think the upper coast with the redwoods is nicer. See you guys there. Are you guys meeting at 9 at the restaurant to eat, or should we be done eating by that time. Maybe we can have a breakfast together & talk a bit before the trail. I have a continental breakfast at the hotel, but who knows how extensive that will be.
Troy

We're meeting basically across the street from the Waterwheel restaurant. If you want to eat there, do so a bit earlier so we can begin the run around 9:00'ish. The run itself should place us at Usal Beach by around noon'ish or so, depending on our rate of travel. Usal Beach was where a good portion of our time in the past, has been spent just having fun. This allow play time there, plus time to put you back on the road to where ever your next destination would be.

Weather wise, we've been having showers the last 2 days...that's a good thing. It'll keep dust down to a minimum, plus maybe even provides some play mud along the way. For those participants in the "stock" range, don't worry.. the mud isn't really that bad, and a stock rig should do just fine. Besides, the weekend forcast is partly cloudy with bits of sun, so the showers are behind us.

See you all on Sunday morning !!!!!

Love to but the rig is not ready, and my girlfriend would kill me if I even mentioned it. :twak:
