Lets adopt a trail

Can they provide a list of trails? Is FB5 adopted. I don't recall a sign.

I would like to purpose to ODF, perhaps we can help out by improving the Street Sign Situation. Maybe some signs that that have arrows to trails at major junctions.

I like that sign idea. It would sure help out at the major junctions and turnoffs.

As far as trails go. Raven Offroad is taking care of FB5 and the Crushers. Actually on Saturday they proposed a pretty cool idea to ODF. It will take a grant and a lot of man power, but would be a cool end result. That's all I'm sayin. :shhh:

I'll ask which ones are still available. Do we want to go for one that would require a lot of work, or one that would just require some seasonal maintenance?

I would say one that may require some seasonal maintenance for now. If we have some consistent turn out, then maybe we can tackle a bigger job.

I would agree with Ken on this. These things always seem to be more difficult to make happen and get support for than what expected :lecture:

You can always do more later, but you can have a pretty significant negative impact on the ODF (if it is anything like our DNR) if you sign up for more than you can handle.

We have a few trails still unadopted. They are: #6 Browns Powerline, #10 University Firepower, #16a Saddle Up, #26 Bates Rd., #28f Rock Garden, and sections of Archers Firebreak.

I ran Saddle Up for the first time this weekend, and thought that may be a good choice. It winds through the trees for a bit, and then has a really good downhill section to it before the end. The trail looked to be in good shape, but the hill climb would probably be something to keep an eye on through the wet season.

Bates Rd is another possible choice. I could see some potential erosion issues and waterbar issues during winter.

Aside from Archers, I'm not familiar with the other choices, but if anyone else is let us know.

Opinions?

I vote for University firepower. this trail is in DYRE need of an adoption. I have been wheelin for two years now, and the lower section has always been closed. the upper section was open last summer but never this summer.

It's my opinion we have a rather large amount of PDX guys and then the select few Northern washington guys that would jump on the opertunity to get involved.

With my experiance it takes a few die-hard guys that are willing to lead the way. aka take control. and then its all about rounding up the guys.

either way. this is all just my $0.02

Well you know I'm in at least I better be seeings how I started this mess lol
As far as trails go I don't have to much thought as to what one, sadle up sounds good though.

i really enjoyed running Bates Rd the other weekend and would like to see this one kept open. Saddle up i am not familiar with. eitherway one works for me. they sound like semi-easy trails to get us started.

Dustin & Ken you have mail.

I like the thought of Bates rd. It actually originally went further beyond the top where it ends now. It was graveled over for logging. Perhaps that is one that could be expanded in the future...

IM IN FO SHOW!!!! Then ill have a nice trail to break her in on, maybe just break her. well see...

Bates Rd scares me for some reason, there's just something about hill climbs that don't sit well with me. Maybe Dave knows why? :gag:

My concern with University Firepower is the amount of work it needs. I know the lower culvert crossing has been closed for awhile, and the upper part has had erosion problems in the past. Do we really wan't to start with a project like this?

I think Saddle Up or Bates Rd would be a good start. If we still have the support next summer, then I'm sure ODF wouldn't mind if we wanted another project. There's a lot of talk now, but will we have the support when we post a work party?

Try and get out there in the next few weeks and check these trails out. This needs to be a club decision. I'm going to try and make it down there on the 27th for a quick day run. Anyone is welcome to join me, we can check out some of these trails then.

I have never been on Bates Rd but I love the uphill climbs myself. Seems everytime I get to go out on a trip we always seem to hit the same trails I want to see more.

Mike and i have tentative plans to take the kiddies camping that weekend. so we may still be there when you are. i would deffinately like to take a closer look at these particular trails, if we are going to adopt one.

I am a lil more nervous going down hills myself... I wish I had pictures..

I think we should plan on the usual suspects. If you look at the PDX area, there are only 6~10 consistently active members. There are a lot of others that seem to come and go. At least thats how it seems to me from my experience over the last couple years.

I think starting with one is a good idea. One Trail, or one Project would be good. I am still a proponent for street signs. or Trail Sign improvement.

I think we could expand the gamut on some fund raising activities also. Actions.. and other things that we could put together to offset funds.

In chating with the ODF rep, he led me to believe that it doesn't take much. As in number of people or money.

I wanted to revamp this thread. I checked out Sadle UP. Looks Great.

I think we should put some type of formal.. stuff for this to actually happen.

Tillamook ODF and the OHV specialists have a goal to make TSF a World Class OHV system. They have the operators and materials on the mountain. Its all about us getting involved.

Regardless of what Hillary says.. it doesn't take a village, just a few of us to start the ball rolling.

In The Discussions I have had, most other clubs.. only have 3~4 members that are active on their projects. Most others are volunteers or short timers..

I am just a member here, so I am not sure who needs to kick this off, and make it a chapter goal.. or whatever.. but we need to get our arses in gear if we want to do anything in TSF next year. Their yearly planning meeting is in November, where clubs pic weekends to hold events for next summer. Volunteer hours rules all.

Like I said above.. I am not sure how to make this a NWC priority, or who needs to condone it.. but I envy the guys in washington for acomplishing the trail adoption. I think it would make the PDX section more of a club and less of a place to just find guys to wheel with.

amen.

As far as I know we are in the process of picking a trail to adopt. I haven't been up there recently, and am not that familiar with the trails available. As a club covering a large geographic area, we need to make sure we aren't biting off more than we can chew.

As was evident with the Goat Mtn cleanup this last weekend, there can be a lot of E-interest in participating. But when it comes down to doing the work the actual turn out may vary. I'm not pointing any fingers by the way. There were many threads on many boards regarding that clean up with eager helpers that got side tracked. All I'm saying is that I don't want to promise anyone the moon if we can't deliver.

With that in mind I know we have people out there looking over potential trails to adopt. Once we have a few potential victims, we'll do a poll and pick one. I'd suggest we focus on keeping it clean with the erosion controls working at first. Then as things progress we can look into adding challenges etc.

So you people that know TSF better than me come up with a short list of red headed step children of trails up for adoption.
