this topic was very helpful, but would i be able to use the "bastard" pack method on my '92 xj D35?, and also what can i do to get a lift in the front? (the more details the better) i have heard that F150 springs give you 6" any truth to that?
p.s. bought it for cheap, and i'm not trying to spend 5x what i paid for the vehicle on lifting plus tires and all.
you can buy coil springs fairly cheap (SeriousOffroad.com). you wont want to use full size truck coils because they with be like sticking a piece of solid pipe in there. hard as a rock.
I have combined two stock xj leaf packs which gave 3" of lift and rode very nice.
I read somewhere that you can use the v6 (non-supercoupe) Thunderbird coils with insulators for about 3 inches of lift. They have almost the exact same spring rate as the XJ stock, so the ride would be close.... The thing with this is, how much are you going to spend on them versus getting a set brand new... may not be worth it.
also, not trying to sound like a jerk here, but understand that lift kits for the XJ are typically cheaper than any other rig out there.... Wheels tires are not a cheap investment when comparing to the relativity low cost of XJs. I mean, you can pick some up for ~$1500-2000 running and in decent condition (in my area). a new set of 33's with aftermarket wheels can cost 1000-1400ish depending on what you get. factor in a lift, maybe some axle mods, some bumpers.... it all adds up..
food for thought.
