First post ... experienced Jeeper, new XJ owner, need tech

Lads, just remember in giving this gentleman advice that his XJ is an '86. Swapping a 4.0L in-line 6 cylinder into a pre-1987 XJ requires a considerable amount of modification to the front clip. (Some people say it also requires changes to the firewall, others claim it doesn't. I'd like to know for certain, but not so badly that I want to find out at my own expense.)

I know a lad who swapped a 4.3 Chevy (4.3, not 3.4) into an '86 XJ. I asked him when he sold the truck if he'd do the same thing on the next one and the answer was "NEVER AGAIN!" It can be done, but since the 4.3 is a shortened small block V-8 and requires all the same adapters for tranny and such, if you're going to consider the 4.3L you might just as well do the V-8.
