Busted ARB

On a steep climb this past weekend, I slid back about 5 feet and landed on a ledge with the wheels spinning.

By the RPM in the video, you can tell that I didn't engage the locker midway, and it didn't lose pressure.
I was able to drive out of the trail and home, which saved me a massive flatbed fee.
Back at camp...
Knocked 3 teeth off of each of the spider gears in the ARB in my 8.8.

The side gear on the 'pinion side' is unaffected and moves properly.
The side gear on the 'ring side' is fused in place, or so it seems.
This allowed me to drive home with the drivers wheel powered the whole time, and the passenger axle bucking on turns but silent on the highway, for a full 240 miles, which you cannot put a price on.
I pulled the 'cap' off of the ARB differential, but cannot get the side gear to spin at all.
Fused to the carrier...
The locker is an older RD15 model, which is far inferior to the RD81 currently used.
I have been buying from/speaking with the guys at ARBUSA for 9 years now, and they are the best company in the world to do business with.
My guy Marc at ARB will upgrade me to the newer ARB for $600, or I can get a Detroit from LMT for $615.
The ARB is usually about $1000, so it is a screaming deal, but...
I went with the Detroit, because the ARB is backordered for a few weeks, I plan on wheeling Memorial Day, and I tire of switches.
My front ARB will stay, and will be replaced with another ARB when I get my 44 in.
Gotta find something to fill that hole in the dash now.
The Detroit should be here by Friday and I will toss it in Saturday.
Time to learn how to set 8.8 gears...

Those hold up well. Nice choice.

Hmmm...

normally I would say there is a lube issue, perhaps it was low?

Either way....that sucks, glad you made it home OK.

Rev

I think you have a lube issue.
You know me and know that I wouldn't miss something like that.
ARB fully admits that the RD15 was an early, weak locker.
Shock loads will kill the early C-clip ARBs.
I ought to get the Detroit by Friday, and install it Saturday.
Memorial Day at McCaslin, assuming I can figure out the 8.8 gear install.
:skull1:

Say hi to the Wyfe and kids.

Jealous you actually get to wheel. Been using the MJ to haul shit left behind by the previous homeowner to the dump.

Been busy convincing the neighbors that the little mexican looking dude mowing the lawn actually owns the place.

FWIW...you can go to hell...
Try and respond to a PM once and awhile.
Obviously you found a booster seat, and can now reach the keyboard.
Next issue?

Yup...I know you....that is why I suggested you check the lube.

:D

Not to say that your driving "style" does not involve shock loads.

Rev

Please!!!
Rev, you know that my offroad driving is more finesse than skinny pedal.
However, peer pressure got the better of me that weekend, and cost me dearly.
So it goes...
