My 96 did the same thing. Turned out to be the 02 censor on the cat.

I doubt it's a transmission cable setting - You wouldn't get a backfiring from that.

I am having the EXACT same problem I have been working and changing sensors like crazy wasent the TPS or the CPS ,cap,wires,plugs,or the cat.I havent checked the fuel presure when its acting up but I wasent very sure if it is the fuel pump or not due to the fact that it never dies it just idles rough.I would be so greatfull for any ideas or coments that may help.
