My 96 Cherokee has the exact same problem!
It's winter in Australia now (50-60 degrees when I try start it) and after leaving it overnight or for a few hours I have to wait 5+ min for reverse to engage. Once it does it's fine, no other symptoms. The colder it's been, the longer I wait. Really cold, I have to push it back.
Forward is always good. I have asked the dealership to replace the filter and oil and it still happens, but I'm not sure what oil they used. They reckon the seals have hardened up and it needs a new clutch pack at stupid costs.
Please post back if you manage to solve it and how, thanks,
Sean
