They will bolt in. Are all the connectors the same? Depends on if you have an early or late 96. If connectors are different, it's a task that can be handled in an hour with a solder gun, heat shrink, and wiring diagrams for both years.

just swap the sensore if need be, why make things more complicated

Put a 99 in the kids 96. Just pull the distributor wire sensor thingy off your 96 and slip it into the 98 distributor. You'll know what I'm talking about when you go to plug the wire harness to it. Or just put the 96 dist into the 98 block.
