DCX settles emission charges

Defective controls will be fixed on 1.5 million Jeep, Dodge vehicles in agreement with feds.

-- DaimlerChrysler AG reached a $94 million settlement with the government to repair defective emission controls on nearly 1.5 million Jeep and Dodge vehicles, federal officials said Wednesday.

The Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency said the agreement involved vehicles from the 1996-2001 model years.

It settles allegations that the automaker violated the Clean Air Act by failing to properly disclose defective catalytic converters installed in the vehicles.

Federal officials said it represented the largest settlement involving an emission-related defect reporting case.

"Automakers' prompt and full disclosure of emission-system defects to EPA is critical to ensuring that vehicles on the road comply with the Clean Air Act," said Sue Ellen Wooldridge, an assistant attorney general in the Justice Department.

As part of the deal, DaimlerChrysler will recall about 494,000 vehicles to fix a separate defect in the onboard diagnostic system installed on the vehicles and check the catalytic converters, a device installed in the engine's exhaust system to control emissions and reduce pollutants.

The vehicles covered under the recall include 1996 Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees with 4-liter engines, 1997 Cherokees and Dodge Dakotas with 2.5-liter engines and 1997 Jeep Wranglers with 2.5-liter engines built after July 1996. Also covered are 1998 Wranglers, Cherokees and Dakotas with 2.5-liter engines.

The automaker said in a statement that it had not violated the law and both the EPA and California officials "have acknowledged that DaimlerChrysler has acted in good faith in resolving this matter."

DaimlerChrysler will extend the warranty on the catalytic converters installed on about 700,000 of the vehicles involved. Another 300,000 vehicle owners will receive notification of the catalytic converter problem, which will be covered under the original warranty.

The government estimated the total settlement cost at $90 million. The automaker will pay penalties of $1 million and spend at least $3 million to implement an environmental project to reduce emissions from diesel engines currently in use.

DaimlerChrysler will also pay $1 million to California as part of a settlement with the California Air Resources Board. The proposed settlement is subject to court approval.

I would wait a bit so your dealership already has the word, or you will look like you just got caught by your mom masterbating in her bra
 
I live in NJ and went through inspection on Friday and failed because they could not communicate with my OBD through the connector under the dash. I have no trouble codes or engine light. Did this recall also affect '99 as well? Has anyone heard of this before. My buddy works there he tried a ton of times but no success. I just bought it from a dealer in PA and brought it back and they hooked to it just fine. Whats the deal? Should I try another inspection station. All my fuses are good and I have put about 900 miles on it since I bought it. The only problem I have is that its hard to start sometimes. Its no good to me without a valid inspection sticker. I have no mods-YET!!! Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
IMO if your Jeep dealer can talk to the OBDII, but the inspection station can't it seems to me that the State's equipment is not right.

It seems to me that this could be solved by speaking to a supervisor in the State's inspection division. They probably just wanted to see what trouble codes were being reported by the computer, and I would think a work receipt from the Jeep deal indicating that they could communicate with your computer, and what codes were reported/repairs performed would be sufficient.

Thanks guys. I will be going to a dealership in NJ later this week. The inspection station couldnt pull any codes-all it said was "no communication". I went to auto zone and they hooked there hand held to it and said no codes so we'll see. Ill check the links later. I have to go back on duty. I let you know how it works out. Thanks again-Matt
