'88 to '98 Swap

It is possible to go in the other direction, putting a 97+ AW4 into an older vehicle as you can ignore the front sensor and swap out the rear sensor. Swapping the rear sensor involves pulling the tailcone to swap (and shimming?) the rotor on the output shaft. If you don't swap the rear sensor, the trans computer thinks you're going 4x as fast and upshifts very quickly - you end up in 4th gear by about 15 mph. BTDT.

Honestly, I don't believe it makes sense to spend the effort to shoehorn the older engine into the newer vehicle unless you're just trying to get it running and flip it for a profit. It would be better to call around to the junkyards and find a used HO engine, preferably one you can listen to before they pull it.

How much were they asking for the 98 XJ?

Well, the swap is done!
Changed fly-wheels, manifolds and off we went!
The '98 tranny seems to be working just fine.
We may try to rebuild the HO at a later date if needed, it is locked up and I still have to take the head off to see the damage done.
As far as cost, he paid $1400 for the '98 and we hope to sell some stuff to get his final cost down to about $4000 for what he has to drive.

Thanks for all the input on the tranny, for a young kid it was a good experience!
