242 to 231

i just swapped in a sye'd 231 into my jeep(93 xj I6 auto) and have a guy wanting to buy my old 231 to put in a 98 zj(I6, auto) which came with a 242j. will it be a direct swap?

Different ds lengths will probably be needed, the 242 has a longer output shaft than the 232, so an 232 XJ shaft may work in it's place...

are you sure he has the 242? or the 249? the 242 seems to be the best Transfercase for Grand cherokees. my grand has a 249 and im lookin to swap for a 242.

249 is the quadra-trac, right?

Well if the 242 is shot then the 231 will definately be an improvement from nothing! Also it's a bit stronger...

yeah his 242 is busted, i'm just worried about the splines...he will be getting my old drive shaft since i no longer have a use for it

I expect the same splines because the engines and trannies are the same, and the years similar...

Would that be a 21 spline short shaft? I think that's right...
