Minimum Lift Needed to Run 31x10.50s?

My first XJ was an '84 (with the o-so-fun 2.8L V6) and ran 31's for 2 years...and the jeep felt every single day of it. I'm assuming you have the 4.0, the 3.07's count against you, but IMHO you can do it. Can you mash the on-ramp? No. Will it stress your Jeep more than your current set up...

    BBQ in San Jose

@Poomero: btw I'm thinking it's about time to do a hub change on my rig, and I'd be more than willing to lend a hand (no experience with hubs and bearings specifically, but I also haven't met anyone in the area with another XJ to wrench on).

    GO SHARKS!!!

I think it's about time they start putting some muscle in against Chicago...need to slow down the pace a wee bit. Go Sharks!

    Radio relay blown? Electrically challenged

Nope not yet, but as soon as this rain lets up I'll let you guys know how it goes. I never bothered to check the fuse with the multimeter, I just looked at it and saw that it wasnt blown and figured I was in good shape. I'll try the multimeter and new fuse and see what happens. Ed

    Radio relay blown? Electrically challenged

Ignore.Antz, I think you might have something here...my heater, wipers, signals, etc all work when the key is on acc. The head unit does not. I didn't know that the battery wire was for the deck memory, and acc for the actualy power, I had just assumed that "battery was the main power source...

    Radio relay blown? Electrically challenged

FlexdXJ: my second "doh!" moment was when I realized that I cut the wires too close to the factory harness and cant "easily" splice them back but solder should do the trick. The thing is that, even if I were to do that, I know that the new(er) head unit is good and in working order, so putting...

    Radio relay blown? Electrically challenged

Right on guys, thanks a lot for all of your input. I rewired my splices according the wiring diagrams I used initially (provided on the underside of each head unit) I cross referenced them with Crutchfield's diagrams and everything checked out okay. Got the voltmeter and, as said before, the...

    Radio relay blown? Electrically challenged

Okay, so, I had the factory tape deck/radio in my '91, and thought I'd be cool and install a newer CD head unit from my totaled '84. I cut and splice the wires from the car to the new deck, and checked all the wiring 3x. I followed the wiring diagrams, both for the car and new deck to a 'T'...

    Horrible start for V-Day weekend...

Brutal man. I know how that feels...I had a similar situation in Milpitas where a driver in broad daylight slammed on her breaks and I rearended her. B**** of it was that the light had just turned green and she claimed she saw a dog running across the intersection.

    Muffler vs. No Muffler sounds

I agree with the above. I ended up donating the muffler to a tree stump while snow wheeling, and to tell you the truth I love the way it sounds. Not too glass-packy, just nice a throaty. But to each his own, I know a lot of people that would hate having to hear it on a daily basis...maybe its...

    Converting R12 to R134

Another question...should I just try to get some R12 off ebay, and pop some in there? In other words, would that same me the vacuuming, o-ring replacement, etc. ? TIA Ed

    Converting R12 to R134

My system has two aluminum hoses that run from the compressor to the left of the valve covers and back. It seems like each have two little valves about 2" from the (compressor) end (possibly pressure releases?) And at their ends, have very thin aluminum threaded caps--which if unscrewed, give...

    Converting R12 to R134

Wow, thanks for the quick replies, and all the really good information. Also, some details on my jeep--if I turn the A/C controls on air comes out of all the vents, but temp. wise its like putting it to 'vent' mode. Don't know if that changes the diagnosis. Also, would you guys think it a good...

    Converting R12 to R134

First off, I know that taking it to a shop and getting everything done is the best way to di this, but I don't have too much cash, and the 95+ temps are killing me....that and the girlfriend is gnawing my ear off for my always 'wanting to take the jeep' [1984 V6 2.8] I bought a conversion kit...

    Probably a STOOOPID question.....?

Whats funny is I was wondering the same thing. I've never been a fan of flaming someones question though Im more interested in the differences in between the two shafts...thickness? I know spline count. but is that it?

    I'm Letting NAXJA DECIDE DD:33's , 4.56, 2.8L

Thanks for all the advice...but now im starting to get a little worried. Let me rephrase my question: I already have 33" tires on my stock gear set up--have the 4.56's and and to know if its going to be worth the time put into the install. I know it should wake the Jeep up a little bit but how...

    I'm Letting NAXJA DECIDE DD:33's , 4.56, 2.8L

So as the title says, I have a 1984 with stock gearing (3.55), TF904 3-speed, and the POS 2.8L V6. I found 4.56's for super cheap--both d30 and 35 with the new carrier for my 30. I've done a boat-load of research and have found 90 percent to say that 33's w/ 4.56's will bring me back stock...

    Sacramento--Help regearing a poor college kid's axles? D30/35

Wow that would be awesome...I wish we could get something like that together. Akers87: I got them from a friend who just decided to go all out and go to D44's with 5.38's or something. Kinda bummed nobody has seen this and is able to install gears. Haha. But while were on the subject of...
