Junkyard upgrades

this topic was very helpful, but would i be able to use the "bastard" pack method on my '92 xj D35?, and also what can i do to get a lift in the front? (the more details the better) i have heard that F150 springs give you 6" any truth to that?

p.s. bought it for cheap, and i'm not trying to spend 5x what i paid for the vehicle on lifting plus tires and all.

you can buy coil springs fairly cheap (SeriousOffroad.com). you wont want to use full size truck coils because they with be like sticking a piece of solid pipe in there. hard as a rock.

I have combined two stock xj leaf packs which gave 3" of lift and rode very nice.

I read somewhere that you can use the v6 (non-supercoupe) Thunderbird coils with insulators for about 3 inches of lift. They have almost the exact same spring rate as the XJ stock, so the ride would be close.... The thing with this is, how much are you going to spend on them versus getting a set brand new... may not be worth it.

also, not trying to sound like a jerk here, but understand that lift kits for the XJ are typically cheaper than any other rig out there.... Wheels tires are not a cheap investment when comparing to the relativity low cost of XJs. I mean, you can pick some up for ~$1500-2000 running and in decent condition (in my area). a new set of 33's with aftermarket wheels can cost 1000-1400ish depending on what you get. factor in a lift, maybe some axle mods, some bumpers.... it all adds up..

food for thought.

there's always tons of used aftermarket ones in the classifieds and craigslist also.

There have been brand new coil sets from reputable companies going for 75-100 a set recently... no real reason to use junkyard unless you're getting it almost literally free.

Agreed with both of you. I wouldn't run T-bird coils.... too cheap to just buy a brand new coil, get the rate you want, and the exact height you are looking for...

but for the sake of argument, it's a JUNKyard upgrade... lol

Does anything stop a factory T-Case skid from mounting with a 1" T-Case drop?

Yes there is. The tcase skid attaches from the unibody behind the crossmember to the crossmember so if you drop the crossmember 1" you will need to drop the case the same amount unless you can massage the skid in place

Don't order it from that website though, I waited months and ended up having to sic my bank on their case because they ignored all attempts at communication and also didn't send me any of the stuff I ordered. The only thing they did quickly (or at all for that matter) was take my money.

WJ is way wider - I'm not sure the steering is stronger, but it's wider to go with the wider axle housing. So you'll have to cut it down if you go that route.

I am unsure about WJ 30 carriers but ZJs with 3.73s (most V8 ZJs, verify ratio before bothering to pull a carrier) have the 3.73 and numerically larger carrier, since the d30 carrier split is 3.55 and down vs 3.73 and up numerically.

WJ is 3" wider total from WMS to WMS however all the control arm brackets are in the same location as an XJ.

A WJ axle swapped into an XJ appears that it will give 1.5" of lift just because the spring retainers are taller.

when I find two donors I'm giving it a go (I need to make my WJ 4wd first) but I like the idea of this upgrade.

bigger bearing hubs, better alignment of balljoints inside the tire (going with less backspacing has some negative effects on wear items in the front end because of offset stresses) the steering, the brakes, etc.

oh, and it'll be nice to be at a 5 on 5" bolt pattern so I can run takeoffs from newer Jeeps, and have the same brake parts on both the XJ and WJ.

inb4 all the butthurt comments from all the webwheelers about how low pinions are so terrible. :flame:

oh yeah, and the WJ master cylinder/booster swaps into all the pre 97 XJs very easily. it's even an upgrade compared to the 95/96 setup.

Teamcherokee.com has always been excellent to me.

Same. No complaints about TeamCherokee.

So I looked and couldn't find an answer so I'll post it up...

2 Door JK front springs--will they provide lift on an XJ?

I know that the 4 door spring gets used on TJ's, but I didn't see anything about XJ'x...I have a new set in my gararge off my old 2012 JK collecting dust.

Thanks guys I love this thread, I'm mildly retarded when it comes to my new XJ.

JK springs do not fit XJs - the diameter is different and they are much much shorter - like 3" jk lift springs are stock XJ spring length

I have no idea how they would fit TJs either since they use the same front springs as XJs...

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure as I have been to lazy to actually compare each one side by side.

As far as the JK springs being used on a TJ, I took that advice from a TJ guy in our club that picked up a set of JKU springs for his TJ, not sure if he was smoking crack when he did that or not. :)

Hello gents. Thought i might give you a try, im trying to get a Dakota alt to fit in the XJ. The mounting is not what im having problems with, its the connection i need help with.

Any ideas on how i could wire it in or refer me to a different thread i can post/ask in?

Installed a Mean Green on a '98. Cut the sense and field wires and put ring terminals on. Also modified the charging post. The bracket needed to be ground to fit, however it isn't that difficult.

Cup holders from a 2004 landrover discovery fit perfect on the pre 97 xj center console doesn't interfere with my manual tran or my ebrake or 4 WD shifter even cupped so it doesn't interfere with seats and the cup twists out so if its gummy and nasty pop the top off throw it in dishwasher top rack bang clean without lesson around gotmine both for 2 dollars at pick n pull Kansas city wife foundem not me
