Putting the new axels in this weekend

Oh no, it's a tale that keeps getting better. So Thomas needed to order a o-ring from the dealer, OK, then the dealer said they would not get it until the next day, sound reasonable, Thomas said that he would be picking it up after work yesterday and needed to come out to the shop to help his son work on his car Sunday and would finish the TC then. Got a message from Tomas that he got to the dealer after they closed and was unable to pick up the o-ring.

So now it is looking like making the Reno Run is out unless I take another day off work to go to pick-n-pull for a DS. come back and install it next week.

This............no good.

Maiden voyage of the new axels- 100 miles to Reno, three days of wheeling, then 100 mile trip back. In theory it could work but not my foist choice.

Thank you so much man! :wantyou:
Well ,that's a great idea...... put my front DS on the rear and drive to Reno, why not.
OK, as soon as I get the TC in I'll post up the length.

Thank you Aaron. I'll post up the length when the TC is installed.

How is you new build doing? You going to make any of the runs this next weekend?

No chance of making the runs at all. Most of the heavy fab is done, but the RCVs were just ordered on Thursday, no moving till they get here. It has to be done by June 5th though, cuz we're going on the Con.

Thank you Aaron. I'll post up the length when the TC is installed.

You thinking of doing Sierra Feast? I really want to see your rig and do some wheeling.

I have 2 trail spare driveshafts we could use in a bind but i would need em back after Reno. I love my trail spares .

Thanks Jon, I know you all have heard this before :anon: but the TC should be in today and I will post the length between the TC and the Diff as soon as I can. :confused1

I did not forget to post the length of my needed DS. The guy putting it back together is more of an armature than I though. He has a real shop just not very organized. As he puts it together he make decisions to replace O rings and seals which need to be ordered and picked up the next day.
I hope to have the length today and will post it as soon as I can. Wish I had a garage and was a better mechanic.

That sucks Tim. You could have done it all yourself in a day or less. Sounds like they really drag their feet and dont care for return business

OK, so the saga goes on. Thomas, the guy putting in the TC, lost the rear main seal that goes between the Trani and the TC some where in his shop so the TC is still not in. Another rear main seal is on hold at NAPA for us so we will try again tomorrow to get this thing installed.

Where have you heard this before: as soon as it is in I will post the DS length and see if anyone has one that will fit.

I should have just gone into town and had a transmission shop do the work. Maybe and at this point I say maybe ,it was cheaper to go to Thomas and more convenient but the time factor is off the hook. Lesson learned.

I didnt realize this was at a shop.

this guy is pretty terrible at this stuff. I usually pull the tcase in under an hour, pull it apart in another 15 mins, follow the instructions in the SYE kit, slap it back together, and there you go. How did this take more than like 4 hours? thats lying on my back on the ground too. With a real legit lift, its even faster.

It's a country shop that is low budget and not well organized. He lets me use his shop sometime and is a good guy but being so far from town and only having one lift he would stop working on the Jeep to work on other cars.

Also, getting parts out here can take a day or two.

He had no idea what parts he needed until he started putting back together, so reassemble a little need a seal or O ring go into town and bring it back the next day. Repeat until reassembled.

I get mad and Thomas says everything just kept going wrong, maybe you are not suppose to go on this trip. How do you argue with that? :sure:

Next time, double A - MCO.

Well this all started March 25 with me getting some used axels and needing help installing them.
Today I can say that this thread is over. The TC is in and the front DS is on the rear. I took it out for s spin. No noise, no vibration, so much pick up, ran through the gears faster than it ever has and it was as smooth as silk.
Got back to the yard and there was coolant spilling out of the front end by the cup full. Stopped the Jeep and tried to see where it was coming from but it stopped flowing. Turned on the engine and let is idle for 15 minutes and no more fluid came out. Turned off the engine and it poured out again. When it cools off tomorrow I will do a pressure test to see where it is coming form.
The distance from the TC to the differential is 34.25". I am going to Pick N Pull and get a 93 to 96 ZJ front DS which run 32.875" to install in the rear.
Big thanks goes out to everyone who helped out, offered advice and sent information to help me get through this axel install. And to Aaron for giving me such a great deal on the axels which started this saga.

You are a trooper. Check the upper and lower hoses and the heater core hoses and the radiator cap could be done for. Thermostat housing, and water pump are worth checking too. And make sure you didnt put a hole in the radiator.

Thanks Jon.

You might come back to another thread called Putting a New Cooling System in the Jeep.

Have a great time this weekend in Reno.
