for your Jeep is having another Jeep on the trail with you.

The FIRST story of the winter about a couple going off-road and become trapped in the snow ill-prepared to deal with the elements and conditions.

Be safe everyone.

OK now let's kick-off the gene-pool clearing and the I travel alone all the time posts.

This is Indiana.....I don't even use 4wd unless its super slick and even then its just to keep the ass end in check. :D

I love having my SPOT.

Between that, ALWAYS letting someone know where I'm at and then using common sense I seldom feel too unsafe venturing out on my own.

I also keep a few days worth of food and water with me at all times, warm clothes, boots and blankets.

I always take the spot with me. Even on day runs.

SPOT is another way for the governemnt to track you....j/k

Here is the website. Also if you search the adventure camping forum there are threads about SPOT.

Findmespot.com is their website.

The new versions that work with smart phones are very cool. The ability to leave a custom text from anywhere makes all the difference.

I learned something today (like every 5 minutes when I'm on this forum)! This could come in real handy when we want to test, but don't have anyone to go with us.

They are pretty cool. You can set it up so it tracks your movement too. You pay extra but I look at it like this....What would happen if I was outside my jeep and broke my leg really really bad? If my family saw that my movement stopped at a particular spot it would be pretty easy for them to find me.

You can check in with up to 20 different predetermined messages like "we are in camp" or "we are out on the trail" and send as many if those as you want.

I have the original spot. I have 3 options:

I am OK (customizeable via logging in to the website before the trip)

I am in need of assistance(customizeable via logging into the website before trip)

Emergency, in need of rescue (dispatches S&R to me)

It's neat and all but you know what I love about my Gen1 spot.

I've had it for a few years (bought it just when Spot2 came out).

It has tracked me for well over 10,000 miles.

I've left it on all night numerous times, sometimes even in tracking mode.

It's still on the original set of batteries (yes I keep spares handy, one day those AA E2 lithiums will finally die).

I'd like the custom message but I really like the dead reliability of my current platform.

That and I'm cheap.

PS - I wheel alone, even on my bike. And my jeans are clean, I just washed them last night!

Mine will go for a good three weeks on batteries. That's way longer than I plan on being out and if I go longer its not too hard to keep an extra set of two AAs in the glove box.

Um ya. It's not as easy as it sounds. Especially after you are very cold and don't have the proper footwear. If you are walking through six inches of snow and your feet get cold and wet you might not make it a mile.
