I have an 88 XJ with a 98 Grand Cherokee rear Dana 44. I need to change out the rear axle shaft bearings. Can I do it without opening the differential? How do I do it?
If its the aluminum Dana 44, then yes its c-clips and yes you need to pull the cover off the differential to remove the c-clips. On the good side, you don't have to have the bearings pressed on/off the axles shafts.
For a how-to, you can probably google or search for a writeup on replacing the bearings in a D35 c-clip as its essentially the same procedure.
