Ive searched quit a bit and found out everything on a 231 but not too much about the 242 sye. I know that 4wheel parts has one for 189.99 http://www.4wheelerssupply.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/71116
Does any one sell a whole tail unit or is the "hack n tap" the only way to go on the 242?? Also anyone know of a cheaper one than 190 bux cause you get quite a bit more for 200 for the 231, really dont make much sense to me. I have found the threads about how to install and do but not much info on whats out there for the 242. Thanks I know im beatin a dead horse hasta  :rtm:  :soapbox:

Rubicon Express and Tom Woods are the only two choices.

RE: You cut and tap the tailshaft.

TW: He cuts and taps the tailshaft, then sends you a driveshaft built to specs.

Those are your only two choices with the 242.

I went with Tom Woods because I have always heard good things about him. Well, everything I read was true. Awesome guy, very helpful, QUICK shipping. DS is top quality.

I'll post as a follow up. I did the yoke mentioned by Timber. I have had no issues. The only thing I regret is paying $70 for a 99 shaft. I've had vibation issues and decided to have my shafts balanced. They said my CVs were shot. I balanced and replaced the u-joints and rebuilt the CVs on both shafts for $200 total. The only thing I would recomend when shoping for front shafts is that you check the splines of the slip. If they are sloppy, move on. To respline a shaft is about the same as buying a new one. Obviously you can still do the yoke and just buy a new DS. I am happy with my setup and my rebuilt shafts.
I still believe having to take your shaft out, and get a TWs, and send yours in for the refund is a lot. $200 for someone to do what you can do in an hour or 2 in your driveway is a bit much. IMHO If I was going to do that I would just swap to a 231 w/ a heavy duty shaft. However, I like my 242.
Also, sorry if you do, but I hope you understand I have a late model 242. The early models have the long tail section and will have to get a new seal with the yoke. However, the yoke is smooth enough to seal. Have fun

I have a 242 and just went for the TW setup. I have absolutely no vibes at all and the TCase shifts real nice. It looked like the TW setup was only about $150 than a hack 'n tap with a new DS.

I'll have my old one up for sale soon if you're interested.

Maybe the pic is of a 231 version, but in the TW instructions for there SYE,
http://www.4xshaft.com/np231sye.html , it looks like he does more than just hack n tap. It looks like he hacks and resplines the shaft closer to the output bearing. Is this true for the 242 version?

I am really starting to hate my Jeep!!! All these decisions. Instead of writing this twice, I am going to update my original thread. I just spoke with TWs and found out some stuff. Read my original write up if you are interested.

tom wood's sells one for the 242 basically a hack n tap done by him

I called and ordered a 242 SYE from him today. I'll find out for sure next week, but the person I talked to said they cut off the splined section, and then respline the shaft. The end of the yoke presses against the bearing. So if all that is true, no it isn't a hack and tap.

It is only true for a 96 and newer 242s. 96 and earlier are just hack and taps. Not many people run 242s, but I really like mine. A lot of people assume a 242 is a 242, but they changed in 96. I am not trying to split hairs here, I just don't like blanket statements. Be specific. Also, they do respline the newer shafts closer to the bearing, however, I just found out they just started doing this recently. If this was an option when I made my SYE I probably would have done it. It is a very good set up. If I had a older pre-96 242, I still would not be real thrilled about the TWs hack-n-tap, but that is just my opinion.
