Hi, I'm new to the forum, have a 1988 Wagoneer (xj) , automatic trans, 242 transfer in need of repair. I was looking for a replacement, but the only ones are 231 from the junkjard.
They are asking $400 for a use transfer plus core. I'm on Warner Robins ,GA. area. What is needed to install the 231 in my xj?
Will someone knows of a better deal on a tranfer in the GA. area?

231s were used in '88 XJs. You would lose the full-time option, but that's probably not the end of the universe where you are located.

Just be sure the transfer case you get has the same number of splines as the one you take out at the interface with the transmission. an '88 is probably 21 splines, and most later transfer cases will be 23 spline. I'm sorry, I don't know what year the transition was made, but I think it was around '90 or '91.
