AW4

Yeah you need one from the renix, 21 (renix) versus 23 (HO) input spline shaft.

2.5L does not use the same trans.
In theory you can use aw4 from any XJ, but if you use a 91+ you will need a 23-spline t-case. The later ones also use an electronic speedo, so would need to swap tail cones for speedo to work.

it's the output shaft actually, unless you are talking about the transfer case. But the spline counts you gave are accurate.

2.5L auto 87-90 actually does use the same transmission in some cases. The bellhousing and torque converter are different though and 2.5L/auto was a very rare combo.

I did a writeup on all the specifics about AW4 swaps a while ago, don't have a url handy though. Basically for you, an 87-90 4.0/auto is a direct swap, a 91-95 is a direct swap if you also get the transfer case with it, and 96-97 are a direct swap if you get a 91-95 transfer case. You can also swap a 91-94 (or so, not sure, the helical gear tooth pitch on the low range planetaries changed around 94/95) 23 spline input gear into your 21 spline case and use it with a 91-97 23 spline transmission.
