Troublshooting Grinding Noise

It's your front driveshaft. I had the grinding noise that I could only hear when the drivetrain was under load except mine was coming from the rear. Thought it was the gears or locker so we pulled that apart, adjusted stuff and still had the noise. Turned out to be the rear driveshaft, specifically the CV joint. The rubber ring around the center ball was gone and there was no grease in it. I had recently rebuilt the driveshaft with a new center section and all new u-joints, so mine was greaseable, but it was pointless with the rubber seal gone.

You said you took off your front shaft and the noise was gone, so why didn't you think that was the problem?

Check out this thread to see how the guy rebuilt his driveshaft with a new centering ball. This is probably what you need.

I'm not sure if you can see everything but this is what he replaced.

I spent 30 on one driveshaft and 0 on the other. I had the time to put them on, so I tried it. The hubs are like 200 a piece. I figured 30 bucks was better then 200. The t-case was also free. More like a trade. So I tried that. I found out my hubs are worn AFTER all of this. Midas actually said they were bad, so they might just be trying to get me to spend money.

I brought in my driveshaft to a specialist, who put on a new cv joint and everything at the transfer case side. He said that the shaft itself was shot, but someone else told me that the shaft isn't going to make that noise. So I skipped that part. The reason I don't think its the driveshaft is because I put 2 others on and it still had the same problem. Somehow I don't think all 3 driveshafts have the same problem.

Ok i am bringing this thread back to life partially cause this dude never indicated he got it fixed, and because i have the same issue: a whine/growl in 4hi and 4lo only under power and high decel coast ( slowing down fast in 4low just because its in 4low.)

-did a full transfer case rebuild kit with chain and sprockets and all the goodies and transfer case mount....
-----no change

-new front drive shaft...
-----no change

-New hub assemblies, Ujoints, and ball joints
-----no change

the only thing i can think of next is front gears/bearings. maybe pinion bearing... i did some searching and found nothing extremely conclusive, but it is possible to replace the pinion bearing without tearing apart the whole shebang?

axle spec: d30hp with 4.56 gears

TC spec: NP231J with RE hack and tap

nothing?

The pinion bearings can make the noises you described. You must remove the carrier to get the pinion bearings out. You should not need to have the gears re-setup if you don't move any shims around. Just make sure it goes back together exactly as it came apart. Also make sure all fasteners are torqued to the proper specs.

that is good to know...will i need any special tools to take it apart? i have heard of a case spreader, but i dont know if it would be necissary for my application.

You shouldn't need a case spreader. I use two pry bars one on top and one on bottom to pry against the inside edge of the carrier and they usually come right out. You will need a torque wrench to torque the carrier cap bolts. You will also need a bearing driver to install the new pinion bearing outer races.

jeeperjohn you are the man! thanks.

Oh yea, I figured out the problem. I removed the driveline and put one last one, from a newer cherokee. GONE!. The newer driveline also stopped the vibrations I was getting on the highway. But sadly, those are coming back. Turns out the front drivelines on all the jeeps sucked. I appreciate the input, now I'm on to the next diagnosis-my steering issues.
