To reiterate...

You can not tow a 231 (early at least) with the transfer case in Neutral and one set of wheels not moving. The front and rear shafts are tied together in N (it's part of the part time range). I had a tow driver try that with my '89 once, acted like it was in park, the rear wheels would not turn because the fronts were strapped down to the stinger. I'm also in the group that is quite surprised you were even able to get it going.

This however is not true with a 242, in a 242 neutral is neutral for both shafts.
