The trunk tool kit

This is one for all the apartment dwelling jeepers. What do you keep at home for a tool kit? All my decent tools live in my parents garage, but most of my repairs happen in the parking lot of my building. I hate riding my bicycle cross town for a socket extension or a torx bit. What is the killer in car kit for my 97 xj? Thanx!

I keep a craftsman socket set in its hard case (not the huge one, it is a shallow well metric and sae set in a 12 x 12 in hard case) and a small canvass bag with a metric and standard set of combo wrentches, assorted screwdrivers, pliars, dykes, and small tools. together they dont take up much space and the only stuff I have ever really need for minor repairs was a large breaker bar.

btw, I keep a ryobi plus1 set in my apt as well as a torque wrench. I dont really use air tools, I built my stroker and installed it with the aforementioned tools found in the back of my jeep

It takes up some room but all the tools I use on my XJ stay in the XJ. I want to be sure I can do anything I need to anyplace I am.

Dykes? I'm sure I missed something there. If they are a useful tool sure, but I'm not sure which tool you are reffering to.

You are reffering to a tool right?

Same thing as "side cutters" or "wire cutters".

Oh! I have never heard them referred to as "Dykes" before.

You mean like diagonal cutters or end cutters?

Either way, that's really interesting.

On topic however, I agree with ColoradoJeepXJ. Sort of. All of my tools are stored in the back of my XJ.

Of course, the one in which all of my tools are stored doesn't actually run at the moment, but I don't even have a shed. Just a long driveway.

The contents are similar in essence to XJtrailrider. Although I traded some of the more complex spares for my EMT gear. I just don't ride as hard as some :), so I shouldn't need it.

You would be shocked at how often you can "get by" with electrical tape, Duct tape, a good multitool, a good knife and a multimeter. Fuses and relays should be in every car you won, so why list them here? I also keep one of those multibit screwdrivers and a decent socket set around. Ooh, go to a hiking store and get one of those L.E.D. lights that clip onto your baseball hat!

Save yourself a headache and throw those "Multipurpose" wirestripper/crimper thing in the trash. Get a good wire stripper, and a good crimper. Two seperate tools. Keep them with your sidecutters and crimp connectors/fuses/relays.

Hmm, you will eventually need a set of torx bits. I found out the hard way that most sets don't come with the right bit for the seatbelts. It's a 37 if I recall correctly. If you can, grab gearwrenches. You won't swear quite as much.

I never go anywhere without my deadblow hammer. It's just so fun to have.

Never forget the thumbwrench! Or vice-grips.

I would love to see a picture of all that packed into your Cherokee. You've got everything but the kitchen sink with you. :confused1

I have a $50 tool kit from AutoZone in each of our vehicles. It is in a plastic box with four drawers. It has most of what you need to do emergency repairs. Adding some torx bits for the jeep wouldn't be a bad idea...

X2.

i thought i carried alot, but he's got me beat.
i carry a VERY NICE harbor freight socket set with folding storage case that includes just about every socket i need on the jeep except for the 36mm. it also includes 3 wratches and a couple extensions.
44808.gif

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=44808

and then i carry a soft toolbag with 2 ratcheting wrench sets, extensions, hammer, various pliers etc...

and i found a cool folding storage case at sams club with a large assortment of screw drivers that i keep in the back with the socket set.

and then when i go wheeling i keep an assortment of fluids with me. mostly i carry specialty fluids since we use amsoil in almost everything. so oil, tranny, diffs, power steering and 1 bottle of cheap brake fluid.

that handles it for tools and fluids. other than that, i have those cool seatcovers with pockets in the sides, front and rear, so i keep those full of fuses, handwarmers, pbblaster, weatherproof matches, toilet paper, cigaretts, hunting knive, etc...etc..etc..

i'm still working on my spare parts bin.

xjtrailrider I would hate to see what your garage looks like. And how much do you think that all weighs?

Looks like we run the gamut from 4wd Snap on truck to vise grips and duct tape. My truck gets 100 road miles for every trail mile at least, so light weight is important, compact is important and because I rarely lock the Jeep low cost is important. There are a lot of repairs I will do on the trail but I'm not going to pull a head or weld an axle tube off road or in the parking lot.

Also, I haven't had this rig long enough to find out what breaks. I've got a friend that works at a salvage yard and I need to give him a list of good used bits for my spare parts bag. Axle shafts, drag links, etc... What do you think, are there many 97' up specific parts to look out for?

Dang man.....You need a winch just to get that thing out of the driveway.

I carry what is needed to change a flat tire. Other than that, the only tool I carry every day is my AAA card. I have a couple tools/parts boxes that I load up for 4x4 trips. They contain about 100 pounds of tools/parts, certainly less than xjtrailrider carries though. Each of them alone could easily(?) be carried to an apartment parking lot to work on a Jeep.

About 300#s

Here is how it all packs in. I have enough room left over for my 13 year old son to ride shotgun and my 5 year old to ride on one side in the rear seat. And you have to pack this much stuff, not just throw it in there. It usually takes me an hour or so to get in and right.

Back seat area; My gear bag, tool bag, small tool kit and re-sealable dran pan from Wally World.

toolsgear1pq2.jpg

The back cargo area; My spare(its a 31 now), the 40" tote with the axles and such, storage tote with fluids and stuff, 2 more totes you can not see, chainsaw(Homelite XL), floor jack, straps, d-rings and such. The HiLift jack and shovel is just behind the seat, the rear power inverter is out of site. All of the stuff in the rear is strapped down, and I take it easy with the kids in there anyway. I just bought a co2 set up so I have to figure out where that goes.

My Jeep loaded, Note, I have the OME HD Rear springs.

Don't forget the bailing wire. It's saved my butt a few times.
Starter fluid can also come in handy on the trail for re-seating tires.
