Thank your Jeep 4.0 every day!

Anyone else notice that every modern 6 cylinder engine made today is absolutely gutless on the low end?

I've driven my friends Ford Ranger sohc 4.0 and the thing is so slow until 3000 rpm when it finally realizes you want power.

Agreed. Our old Beretta wouldn't really move until about 3000 RPM as well.

In 2002, I test drove a Liberty (with no intention of buying one) at a Jeep 101.
On their pavement track, I punched it on the straightaway.

It was guttless - even compared to my '88 with 270K miles on it.
Much more so, when compared to my '00.

Horsepower = torque X RPM divided by 5252.

Physics, not marketing. No wonder they get such good mileage, they don't make any horses (or torque) till way out of the normal daily driving RPM band.
