Will the NP231 from a 1995 XJ 4cyl 5-spd Transfer to a 1993 XJ 4.0 AW4 that currently has a NP231? Is there a differance between the mounting of the NP231 Manual trans to Auto?

No. It will not fit. The 4 cyl NP231 is a 21 spline input from the AX-5. The NP231 with the AW4 (from 91+ i think) is 23 spline. You may be able to swap the inputs, but there were a few different lengths and gear cuts, so make sure before you do.

Thanks for the feed back . I now have a 1995 4cyl AX-5 with dead transfer case and a 1993 6cyl AW4 with dead tranny good case. I want the 6cyl auto for wheeling - any good sources for used XJ parts? An XJ graveyard Hasta

According to the sticky at the begging of the forum, 90 up 231s are 23 spline. so yes it should work.If it is the original 5speed in your 95 it should be the AX-15 wich is 23 spline also

Except on the 4 angry squirrels version they were still 21 spline.

I would see if you can swap inputs.

Asin-Warner AX15: 5-speed in 90-00 4.0l I-6cyl and 2.5l I-4 models. Earlier versions use an internal slave cylinder, which changed to an external slave cylinder sometime in the mid 90s. 23-spline output shaft. 3.07:1 axle gear ratio.
Gear ratios: (1) 3.83:1 (2) 2.33:1 (3) 1.44:1 (4) 1:1 (5) 0.79:1 (R) 4.22:1

His Jeep should have the AX-15, not the AX-5.If it's original, that is.

Ax-15=23 spline.
AX-5=21 spline.

New Process NP231 Command Trac: 2-speed, chain drive, part-time 4WD. 2.72:1 low-range. 87-01 2.5l 4cyl and 4.0l I-6 models with manual or automatic transmission. 87-89 21-spline input, 90-01 23-spline input. The older models used a vacuum switch to activate the dash indicator lamp and engage the front axle disconnect. Newer (non-disconnect axle) versions used an electrical switch to activate the dash lamp. The shift indicator pattern is 2WD > 4WD high range part-time > Neutral > 4WD low range part-time.

As far as the transfer cases go,ALL 90 up is 23 spline no matter what combination it was mated to.

And CaliGold, please don't think I am trying to argue with you.I'm just going by what the sticky says

All the 4 angry squirell (and 2.8L V6) tcases are 21 spline EXCEPT the early XJs with 904 (3 speed) automatic which are 23 and shallow. \
I put a 23 spline AW4 into my J10 (big version of the Comanche) with an NP208J (which has the same input as the tcase used by the 4 cyl and V6 autos). All it took to bolt up (besides driveshafts and a custom mount) was a 1" spacer from Partsmike.
