T case options

I have a 96 zj with a 5.2 and 44re that has the quadratrac transfer case. Will most t cases mainly 231 mount up to this? I had a xj and knew what worked with it but wonder if they interchange with the 44re.

i'm pretty sure its a common swap, most ZJ folks hate the 249 piece of crap tcase with a passion because of the viscous coupler. try looking around on www.nagca.com or using a google search - it's been done many times.

242 would work as well, if you need/want Full-time 4wd option as well.

If you do a 231 swap you need to pull your input shaft from the 249 case and swap it into the 231. The 249 used a long input and most 231's are short/medium. You will have to measure it though to be sure. You will also need the linkage off the 231 (?) It's been a while but one doesn't work on the other. Also the sensor for the 4wd light is different I believe.

I agree it is a worthless case. I really want to do a 231. Thanks for the info, gives me some direction.
