As far as I know, all years of 4.0 starter are interchangeable (pretty standard Mitsubishi starter motor...)

I am using the starter from an '98 XJ on my '88 MJ, which still has the factory issued 4.0. There have been no issues to date as far as it working goes, but it does NOT seem to like spending extensive amounts of time being covered in mud.( it likes to try and bake the mud into a custom formed shield.)
