Rear end noise

Hi,

Looking for some thoughts on a sound coming from the passenger side rear of my '92. It seems to come from over the tire area.

When I go over bumps, I get a thud or hollow type thump. I know that isn't very technical..sorry.

I do not get the sound when I push the vehicle up/down while stationary. So it does not seem to be from parts hitting.

I've looked very closely at the underside and do not see anything obvious.

What is the sympton of a worn sway bar or leaf bushings?

The springs and shocks act and look fine. I also checked for a loose liftgate

Thanks for any thoughts...

Well, here is my experience with that "type" of sound.
About 13 years ago I had a Ford Escort. (total junk) And it had a similar thump. I searched and searched. Found nothing. Till one day I decided to take off the inside plastic panels around the rear wheel well.
Much to my surprise I had found that the uni-body had been rotted our almost completely around the strut tower.

That could be a consideration. Even though the shock is good (I removed the lower mount and pushed it up and down), the upper mount area is very rusty. The last time it was installed, the person did not even get one of the mounting bolts all the way in.

I'm really hesistant to try and remove them as they probably will shear off.

Any thoughts from others?

Thanks

My last XJ had a similar quirk, but it only seemed to occur when there was weight in the back seat or in the trunk. Does yours follow the same pattern or is yours continuous?
