One ton tapered inserts or ream?

I'm not a huge fan of tapered inserts

I had some really well machined ones that were tig welded into my knuckles to go from Heims back to TREs.

Eventually the knuckle cracked around the insert. Especially on a D30 knuckle you remove too much material imo.

I've also personally winched a rig back to camp that failed a pitman arm with one of those split adapters. Twisted it right out of the arm.

My vote is to ream the knuckles properly

you had to winch a rig over a pitman arm failure?

he had no steering after that.

custom pitman arm at a somewhat weird angle, none of us had a spare that would work.

winching him around stuff was easier than anything else.
