NV242 Select-Trac Tech

Wow, talk about resurrecting an old thread... but, since it's been brought back, I'll comment on it... LOL

I've had three NV242J's apart and here are the differences that I see between the Hummer unit and the Jeep unit... the differential, cooler, and low range gear.

The cooler is obvious so I won't discuss it.

The differential in the Hummer case has more planetaries in it, therefore making it stronger than the Jeep model. In this picture:

you can see that there are three planetaries visible, with three more not visible behind the mode fork. On the Jeep 242 there are only three planetaries total.

The low range gear set is also stronger with the same six planetaries as seen in this picture:

The Jeep 242 (and 231 for that matter) only have three planetaries in the low range gear.

From what I can see, everything else inside that case is exactly the same as the Jeep model. I would love to get my hands on a NV242AMG to try and build a super 242J... maybe after I win the lottery...

Joe

This is exactly what I am working on right now. I already have the 242AMG, and you are right everything is swappable between the two to build a super 32 spline f/r output awd t-case. Actually I've also read that the later model 242's, think libby and such, already have a 32 spline rear output, but have yet to confirm this.

Just out of curiosity, what did the AMG case cost you?

I found one at a local military junk yard, well the guy collects whatever military parts and vechicles he can. Anyways, I picked it up for ~$200.

If he happens to have another one let me know... I'd be intersted in one at that price.

Next time I am over that way, I'll stop to see what he's got. I do know there are two versions, not sure on the details, but I have one out of a 95 H1., my buddy got the TH400 that was attached to it. Speaking of that I know he is my only local source for new seals, thanks for the reminder.
