Keep the 33s.

I used to get 17mpg on 33 swampers and stock gears. Tranny is going strong 8 years later with a lot of abuse. I now run 5.13s and 37s and get maybe 13.8 mpg.

Drive around in 3 and not D, and only use D when you are freeway cruising .

You are not destroying the tranny. Change your fluid 1-2 times a year and add a tranny cooler.

my MJ on 33s and stock gears seems to do just fine.

Chances are you are measuring them wrong. Your stock wheels are going to be 7" and your average aftermarkets are 8". The measurement is inside lip to inside lip. Not outside.

Either way is fine. Though you will likely get some lip from the tire shop if your trying to put a 12.5" tire on a 7" rim. But i have that same senario on both my jeeps. They run fine.
