4WD needs loose surface / slippage potential, or it will "shudder". I'd take a look at this vehicle in person if you are interested.
But a bit of 4WD shudder is different than "grinding". Lots and lots of possibilities here.
If you do make a bid on this, be sure it is a lowball bid if you are unsure. If there is a potential issue, if the issue isn't serious, generally speaking, the owner will resolve them BEFORE selling it.
