This seems to be an ever increasing problem. I don't believe the machines the chain parts stores use test the alternators correctly under a load.

I think the same thing. I don't know if its user error or the machine itself, but it doesn't work. That also goes for those digital battery testing devices that print a slip out. More crap.

Do the testers use an internal regulator of their own, or are they just reading straight output?

I don't know. But they have some sort of wiring adapter for our alts so I assume they activate the alt to charge
