i've read that the XJ shackles are too short and can swing the opposite way.

It would depend, centerpin location,etc. Stock MJ packs are 57 or 58" eye to eye. Long shackles would help. May have to move the front mount forward, hmmm. For SOA, mabye a boomerang shackle would help. Have you looked into Hellscreek lift springs?
