Lunatic fringe - Arizona bound.....

Troy,
If it makes you feel any better, my Power Wagon gets about 10MPG totally empty. With 4.56 gears it sucks to tow anything.
Have fun on your trip and dont take piss breaks at rest stops. You know what they say about them. :eyes:

Have fun in Arizona troy. Lol

DaJudge, I like your avatar. Go Wings!

Ok, if it hadn't been official before, this should certainly do it......

I've got an XJ addiction and there ain't no 12-step program that'll cure me. I must be certifiable....... totally bug nutz.......

On Saturday at holy-crap-its-early in the morning, I'll be heading to Flagstaff, AZ to buy another XJ........ :looney: I'm totally bonkers right? 22 hours and 1500+ miles for a friggin' XJ? :laugh3:

BillR made me one helluva deal on his son's white '98 with a bad engine - so much so that the travel costs still make it worth doing! They're even going to put me up overnight so that I don't have to load and go..... (Hmmm, maybe Bill's the certifiable one..... :wierd:)

I'm kinda looking forward to the road trip too...... never been to Arizona!

You boys have fun running Pole Hill Saturday!

Here's the object of my obsession:

I going to New Mexico way? Arizona is pretty sweet. It will be fun road trip. Flagstaff is not too far the Grand Canyon should swing in there and take a look. You can take the Jeep with you there is plenty of parking for trucks with trailers. My grandma grew up in Flagstaff her dad was a cattle rancher. She lived in dirt floor shack on side of the mountain.

Are you speaking native american? Lol

X2 Go Wings. I cant beleive as a die hard Avs fan I am saying that. But someone needs to show that crybaby sidney what real hockey is.

I was wondering about that when XJNOOB commented. I figured as an Avs fan it would be pure hate!

I am an ALL Detroit sports person.. even the Lions...

I've made the drive to Pheonix a few times, and while it won't help your mileage it can be a lot faster if you skip New Mexico and cut the corner. I get off I-25 at the Walsenberg Exit and take HWY 160 W to HWY 89 S (just past Tuba City, AZ) and follow that to Flag Staff, AZ. Of course for it to actually be faster you have to maintain I-25 speeds on the smaller highways. Its about 60miles shorter, but 1.5hrs longer if you abide the speed limit. Although 55-65mph speed limits would probably help your fuel economy. Just food for thought.

On an other note, I-40 can be pretty fun going tinto and out of FlagStaff in a sporty car.

Is Wolf Creek Pass short and steep? Or is it a fairly gradual winding up and over kind of pass? Might not be a bad way to get there since I'll be unloaded and the empty trailer doesn't affect MPG much, but if it's a steep climb like Vail Pass and the pass going up from Silverthorn, then I should probably avoid it........ :dunno:

It's pretty steep, and about 30 miles long.
Beautiful scenery, but I'd avoid it when you have the XJ on there. You'll go through Alamosa, over the pass to Pagosa Springs, and on through Durango and Cortez. At Cortez, the road turns south for several miles. Watch for the right turn a few miles past the casino. The next 5 hours after that will be REALLY boring and most of it only 2 lanes.
Try not to flatten any sheep!:shhh:

I have only drivin wolf creek once and it was at night EB. I was driving an F-550 with an empty 48' wedge car trailer. It seemed steeper/windier (read:switchbacks) going up EB than you would hit going WB. But than again that was only once and at night.

That's probably accurate. It does seem a little steeper eastbound than it does headed this direction.

Another thing to consider, the last time I was on Wolf Creek a tractor trailer had rolled and we were stuck in a traffic Jam for 4+hrs.

That is way we went to Grand Canyon back in Jan. It was awesome drive. Wolf Creek pass is AWESOME when you come down the West side of the mountain the view is amazing. If you are staying the night you can take the scenic route. Pagosa Springs is really cool. If you had time you could hit Mesa Verda that is pretty awesome too. Fun shelf roads there. LOL

I drove over in Jan when it had snow on it. And it is not too bad on the East side. The West side is where it could be hairy in snow. Since there will be no snow you should go that way. You will not regret it. I don't know how traffic will be since vacation season is starting up. But there was no traffic on the road back in Jan. I think there was one hour we saw 15 cars tops on the road.

Thanks for the info Josh. I'm leaning toward hitting that route on the way there - sounds like it would be worth it, and I get to say I saw more of southern CO this way.
