Yeah, 1/2ton trucks in general are not meant to be towing jeeps up the mountains. I try to go wheeling every weekend and have to tow the Jeep so it's a bit more of a necessity for me.
Biggest issue I've seen with towing my jeep using a 1/2 ton isn't brakes or suspension, just a lack of power to pull the hills. You wind up revving he he'll out of it locked into a lower gear a lot. I think that's where the 5.3 had it's advantage, it seemed to make more top end power than the 5.4 or the Dodges 5.9. The dodge and ford got off the line better but the chevy maintained speed up the long hill better.
