lost a bit of power in fourth gear [really, at low rpm]

Hey guys,

I recently replaced the belt on my '94 xj. It had previously been squealing a lot due to a broken belt tension bolt [the one under the steering pump], so I made sure it was good and tight. It is wonderfully silent, but I noticed that I've lost some power. I was wondering if that might be due to over tightening the belt.

It's not awful, which is why I've been suspecting the tight belt might have something to do with it.

Thanks for any help,
Travis

The belt should have nothing to do with it.

x2. While belt driven accessories rob HP, the belt would have to be loose enough to not be turning some or all of the accessories to make a difference.

However, if you have a failing belt driven accessory it can rob you of power and MPG. JP Magazine editors noted this in their three part article on XJ mileage, in the first part I believe a failing PS pump was the culprit.
