My job takes me a lot of places and almost exclussively by air.. I set up camps, fuel systems and survival shelters all over Alaska and beyond.. My last trip took me to an old DEW line site at Big Mountain on lake Iliamna. If you dont know, a DEW line site was an early warning Radar program set up in Alaska just after WWII to detect if the Ruskie's launched a missile at us. We were setting up a camp for a cleanup crew to check for hazmat materials and take them out.

We had over 100,000 pounds of Equipment to get into this landing strip. The nearest road was almost 100 miles away. This stuff came in from Anchorage.

2- C-130 loads
5- DC-3 Super loads
2- C-46 fuel loads of 2000 gal each, JET-A

And some WWII airstation Porn... Tanaga Island, last used in 52 and abandoned. The army ran all equipment on the runway, dropped the oil pans and ran the motors til they seized. Tanaga Island is closer to Tokyo, Japan than it is to Anchorage, AK. One Island west of Adak, AK

Sounds like tough work. Salary partially paid off in Scenery?

Wow,.. Didn't know there were any C-46s left around.

Like to know the story behind the cut in the background,.. somebody moved a butt-load of dirt and rock for something there,...

Thats the cliffs of the coast, no cuttting, just sheer drop offs to the rocky beach below.

Cool! That looks(in the photo anyway)like a perfect 90 degree cut. Usually erosion won't do that. Out on the end of the Aleutian Islands, gotta be volcanic, so it's not sedimentary rock turned up on it's side,..

Could be basaltic columns or could be a fault.

Wow! I wondered if you were still in the great white north still! Post as you can this is neat stuff.

That would require him to turn red again.

Haha, well I'm sad to say there are no new ones to add... but I can go red again and repost if you guys like. Gimme a week or so. My old computer has all of them on it, just gotta burn a disk.
