I tried this but couldn't get the damn thing to turn...even with everything in neutral...maybe i'm retarded, but do I need to jack it up or something?

if you cant turn the flexplate, you can try a breaker bar and socket on the harmonic balancer.

Or use the starter.. just mark each nut that you tighten with paint..

Is this a common problem? I really can't tell if it's something like a rod bearing or a loose bolt on the flex plate...?

You could also just pull the spark plugs. Then engine should turn pretty freely then since it has no compression holding it back.
