help me decide which oil to run

I've been running Delo 400 15-40 in my '89 since new. 170,000 miles and has a bit of lifter noise; oh well. By the way; recently found out that you can still get the old formulation (ch-4) in 5 gallon buckets and 55 gallon drums. My other DD is a 04 cummins pick-up, so I was "really" pleased to see the alternative to the new cj-rated diesel oil. (low-emission crap) xraze

Royal Purple is definitely not the best....

The new HDEO's like Delo, Delvac 1300, and Rotella T dino are all SM/CJ-4. They are by no means 'death oils' CJ-4 has bout zddp levels down to 1000ppm. Thats about 2 or 300 more if your using Mobil-1, Valvoline, Penzzoil, SM gasoline oils etc.

You don't have to run 15w-40. Delvac1 and Rotella T syn are 5w-40, still coming in SL/Cl-4 and the best oil for these hogs we call the 4 point 0
ALSO, Like I already said, Mobil-1 TURBO DIESAL TRUCK oil is Delvac1 rebottled 5w-40. SL and robust. Easy cold morning cranks

Amsoil puts different amounts of zddp purposefully in each of their oils, be sure to research which grade will work best for you.

As long as this Rotella T syn 5w-40 SL/Cl-4 plus keeps filling my walley shelves, it'll be all my jeep gargles with.

so that being said if you change these new sm rated oils before they break down will that counter the lack of zddp?
you sound like an amsoil distributor....wait you are!!! j/k

Its not that simple.....

ZDDP is the primary anti-wear additive in these oils..... With the lower levels present at oil change, then you are starting out lacking the necessary levels of protection.

Hey, we all have to do what we have to feed our Jeep habit.......

It'd be nice if synthethic oil would quiet noisy cracked exhaust manifolds :yelclap:

That's why I have extra ear plugs.
I just turn up the stereo so loud nobody can hear it.

I was at wally world today looking at oil and noticed this company:
http://www.powerservice.com/

makes a diesel oil extender that is said to replace additives and detergents to diesel oil giving it an extended drain interval..... it contains zddp in high levels
10,000 ppm to be exact!!!

here's some more discussion on it
:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=187644
looks like powerservice stopped making it though.....the walmart I was in today had a shit load of it left over for $18 a gallon.

and here:
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/269596-diesel-oil-with-lots-of-zddp-gone-in-2-more-years.html

might have to go back to wally world and stock up on this.....any idea on shelf life of this product???
