Trying to find some feedback on the tranny that found in most chevy trucks, more so the checy S10. Whats bad about them, whats good about them. How long do they last and everything. Im use to the AW4 which is a great tranny. Any info will be helpful

If it's like the one in a 6.2l diesel Jimmy Dad had as a company truck at CNW or the the one in a slightly newer 350 TBI powered Chevy Van, expect to rebuild it within the next 40k miles....expect some vibes and then a puddle of ATF behind you on the road right as it gives up.

The one in the Jimmy Dad had from the railroad didn't even last 130k as delivered when the truck was new and those 6.2l N/A diesels only made about 130horse IIRC. Granted he had while CNW and the BN were building the rail line running into the Powder River Basin coal mines and he was one of the CNW managers on that build, so it saw lots of everything between Wyoming and DownTown Chicago. Luckily the van caught fire before the trans came apart in it 8 years ago. The fire was just bad enough to incompacitate the thing, but it took a big wrecker to get it's cancer stricken carcass home, and if it hadn't caught fire, we just may have needed that wrecker anyway.

The 4L60 is an updated version of the old TH700R-4. The "E" version denotes electronic shift control and needs a computer of some type to tell it when to shift.(I don't know if it can be "hot-wired" like a AW-4 to manual shift)

It's a pretty robust transmission, but it doesn't have the longevity of the AW in an XJ. This might be because every vehicle it's put in weighs at least a half ton more then an XJ.

The old Turbo-hydromatics were pretty tough transmissions, and the 4L60 shares the design. "De-engineered" like Torqueflights from Chrysler have been, the newer transmissions have less robust parts and benefit from "upgrades" involving using older design parts(needle bearings instead of newer wave washers, steel instead of plastic inserts, etc) That's why the quality rebuild is better then a factory new- or reman would be.

If it's been babied or taken care of, 130K is probably OK. Problem is, most autos aren't taken care of, and if the donor vehicle's dead at 130K, it probably wasn't babied. Personally I'd look for something newer/less miles, or or plan on a reman.

Decent trans but has issues in the s10 due to dexcool corroding out the rad, causing coolant to get sucked into the trans cooler... Speaking from experience
