i found some new rock krawler coils i want to buy they're 5.5" coil fronts for a tj, do they work on an xj?

I think they would end up being 6.5" for an xj.
Im not 100% sure though.

i though TJ coils were 1" less lift than XJ coils
so 4.5" lift?

They will work.
The 4" TJ lift coils I have on my XJ only gave me about 3" of lift.

yes, you will be at 4.5" lift on the xj with those coils

Yes, they will work, TJ advertised height is approx 1" less. Zj coils are approz 1-1.5" taller.
