Before your heart bleeds too much for the corporations, don't forget that nationally, corporations file approximately four times as many lawsuits as individuals, and are likelier, according to what I've read, to be sanctioned for frivolous suits. Everybody knows a few "that's outrageous" suit stories, like the woman who was burned by coffee (third degree burns, the restaurant in knowing violation of codes and having been cited multiple times before, and if you read about it you might find it wasn't so frivolous after all, but that's another story...) but anecdotes don't make good statistics. It's true that Edwards specialized in malpractice and other medical related lawsuits, thus contributing, perhaps, to the less than two percent share of overall medical costs that these suits represent. I don't know whether any of Edwards's suits were frivolous, but I have not heard any allegations that any specific suits were unwarranted. "Frivolous lawsuit" can be a handy buzzword for those not in the mood to think.
