carrier bearings

so i went to put a lockright in my dana 30, pulled the carrier and noticed one of the shims was sticking out and peices had broke off, so i looked at the berings and they need to be replaced,

so i pressed the bearings off and keept the shims together, i just need one shim .007 to replace the messed up one

so the question is, do you think the backlash will be ok if i just replace the shim, or do they gears need to be set up?

You ALWAYS want to reset backlash when you change carrier bearings.

It would be a great starting place,but I would definately check the backlash and pull a pattern.You should have done that before taking it apart.

do you know what the tolerances for the backlash is.

Backlash should be .005-.009"

But it doesnt make much difference on "used" gears.You want to set it back to what it was.
