    Intermittent Bucking. ('87 4.0L XJ)

Sounds like the TPS. Its function depends directly on throttle position, and it's far more likely for it to have a dead spot at part throttle, where you spend the most time, than at full throttle, which is used less often. There is plenty of info on the board on checking, replacing, and...

    Broken fuel rail quick disconnect

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to go ahead and do this, and then keep an eye on it. Can anyone confirm the relevant line diameters? That is, the OD of the fuel rail nipple and the ID of the rubber part of the supply line? I don't want to disable my only form of transportation only to find I...

    Broken fuel rail quick disconnect

I noticed a leak a while ago from the quick disco fitting on the rear of the fuel rail of my '90 4.0. I replaced the o-rings in the connection (twice), but the leak persisted. On closer inspection, I found that the leak is coming from a seam in the short metal segment connecting the female...

92Drip, What did you end up doing? I have a similar problem and want to eliminate the rear quick disconnect. Thanks.

    AW4 tranny oil change..help...advice

I got my XJ with a 220k on the clock and a known history of neglect. The trans fluid was completely black. I started doing a drain and fill every other oil change, and 20k later I have smoother shifting and no problems. Don't pull the pan - it's not worth it.

    Bulkhead Connector

cant find lower radiator hose with a spring

Go to the dealer and get ready to pay about $30. Napa no longer carries the hose with the spring, but for some reason they still list the discontinued part number online. The internal spring has nothing to do with the power steering lines. The hose should have an anti-chafing sleeve on the...

Pulling the Oil pan on my 87 Cherokee

In my experience, it's a royal pain to get the oil pan off on an unlifted 4x4 4.0. To get mine off, I had to disconnect the shocks, anti-roll bar, and track bar to get the axle to full droop, and then I still had to force the pan out between the bottom of the trans. and the top of the diff...

    replacing main bearings

I had good luck replacing all my rod bearings with 0.001" undersize shells and the mains with standard shells. My '90 4.0 had about 230k on it at the time, and the oil pressure was a hair over 0 psi at hot idle with 20W-50. Your engine isn't in quite as bad shape as that, but I'd guess that...

    Oil Pressure Problem...

It's possible but not a fun job. To drop the pan on my '90 4x4 with 4.0 and no lift I put the front of the frame on stands and had to unbolt the shocks, roll bar, and sway bar. Then with the axle hanging as low as it could, I still had to force the pan to get it past the front differential and...

Having problems shifting gears, getting stuck between gears.

Something very similar to what you are describing happened to a friend's YJ a while ago, and it turned out to be the clutch master cylinder. The part was about $100, I think, and not too hard to swap.

old and new style of rear main seal?

Yes. Don't underestimate getting that damned oil pan off if your XJ isn't lifted.

    Kruise Kontrol

As critical to the operation of cruise control as getting power is that it gets vacuum. If you verify that no fuses are blown and the control unit, which is under the driver's side dash, is getting power, make sure that you have no vacuum leaks and that the vac line to the cruise vacuum...

    1998 washer pump prob...MN Jeep!

The tank is only held in by three screws easily accessible from under the hood. No other disassembly of the fender or anything else is required. Remove the 3 screws, the wiring harnesses for the low fluid indicator and each pump, and slip the fluid lines off of their nipples on the pumps, and...

    Heated washer fluid

Agreed. In addition, the best way to heat the washer fluid would be to use a heat exchanger like the one bajacalal describes, which means the engine would have to be warm for the device to be of any use. Even if you use an electric heater in the washer fluid bottle, it will take a few minutes...

    1998 washer pump prob...MN Jeep!

The pumps for the front and rear washers are mounted at the bottom of the washer fluid tank. I don't recall if they can be removed from the tank or if they're molded in, but in any case you have to remove the tank to get at them.

    87 xj

If the pervious owner had the distributor out, moved it around because "it wasn't where he thought it should be," and now the engine is firing with the valves open, I'd guess that he didn't put it back in the right place and now the timing is off. Even if you carefully mark the position of the...
