my'88 idles at 765 warm and starts at about 875 cold unless it's zero then about 925 at first.

Sounds like someone "bumbed" the [power/comfort] control and it's now working in "comfort". Did that before on my "88!

just replaced mine yesterday, '88 limited I6, auto, 242. Inside worn down almost smooth. Springy metal pickups worn down and many plastic ridges melted/worn down. $222. at Napa! worn out! Starts good, backup lights work again.

Had that problem a few years ago. Turns out the owner before me used a rag for a gas cap and it got sucked into the tank and would plug/cover the fuel intake and stall. Once the engine stalled the rag would sink and the truck would start and run till the next time!

Your battery may not be fully charged and your altinator squeals to catch up the charge! good luck

My '88 limiter auto did the same thing. Clean or replace your neutral starter switch. That allowed mine to crank. If your cps is bad then it will crank but not fire. good luck!

If the temperature isn't to warm the compressor will kick off and back on as needed to cool your interior. My '88 has always done this when it's not to warm but will run all the time when it is hot!

My '88 XJ limited has only 125,000 on it and I brought it back from Vegas to Indiana with no rust! I've put 45,000 on it with no problems except valve cover gasket. My buddies '90 XJ has 367,000 with no major engine work but it's starting to get weak.

My '88 limited 4.0 with 242 is a little less peppy when in fulltime versus 2wd.

Know a guy that overfilled his trany and it was summer. The fluid foamed out of the tube and started a fire. He lost his vehicle!!

My '88 has a Gov-lock and yes you need friction modifier for it to work properly. When I spin the wheels the second one turns just after the first one and then they both are "pulling". Not as good as a locker but more liveable and came from the factory with it.

I believe the Limited's have color and Laredo etc. have silver on most years. My '88 limited is colored.

Just bought both ccv's for my '88 Limited with 124K and they were $33 & $36. Both the stealer and NAPA had about same price.
