No off road problems for me. Actually, it's kind of funny. My stock 98 Cherokee gears in 4 low are lower than my wife's stock YJ gears in 4 low. :-) It runs great down the highway w/32's and still gets better gas milage than her YJ...And to top it off... The XJ is the one we take trail riding!

I've always heard that any AT will outlast an MT. For a DD, you might want to keep that in mind. That being said, I just upgraded my DD to a more serious offroader. A trusted friend at a local shop sold me a set of Buckshot MT's because they do OK in the mud and supposedly last a LONG time...

It sounds like your u-joints have been replaced in the past. Maybe at different times. That's why they don't match. I would go to a local parts store and ask for two u-joints for your exact application. They shouldn't be that expensive. Do you have a repair manual? Mine is really helping...

I didn't know how to do the u-joints either UNTIL TONIGHT! The Haynes manual says use two sockets and a vice. Mine were way too tight for that! I got through it with one socket and a decent hammer. Go for it yourself. They're not that difficult.

Getting ready to bump up from a 3" lift to a 4.5. Gonna go from 31 10.50's to 33's. Looks like the largest selection is at 12.50's. I don't think I can run those on stock 7" rims...right? (not a tire guru). Also, if I switched to an 8" rim, what backspacing would keep it reasonably inside...
