    '87 Cherokee Dana 44 Axle

I have a Dana 44 axle that I pulled from an '87 Wagoneer from a local junkyard. I have removed the drums, pulled the axles and cleaned/painted the housing. I threw away the drums since I was going to put on disc brakes. It has an open carrier and the diff cover has a large dent in it (no damage...

    Does anyone have...

    1987 XJ 4x4

1987 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4x4 The time has come to sell my Jeep. I just don't drive it since the kiddo came along. I've spent a TON of time and money fixing this into a very reliable daily-driver vehicle. I've been through almost every system on this Jeep and repaired or replaced everything...

    Easy gear question

I yanked a Dana 44 from the yard and it says it has 3.54 gears on the tag. My Dana 30 up front reports a 3.55 gear ratio. Is this just a rounding error, or is there actually a difference and am I going to have problems running these together?

    Crankshaft Tolerances

My '87 XJ (4.0, PS, AC, AW4, 238000 miles) has eaten three belts in the last several months. It keeps wanting to ride up on the engine side of the crankshaft pulley which causes the engine-side rib of the belt to strip off. I cut that rib off completely and re-installed and it now appears that...

    Jackpot??? (Big Pic)

I found a new junkyard today (at least new to me) that had about nine XJs in it. One was about an '87 limited that I pulled the gauge cluster from. I looked at the rear brake drum and thought it was a little deeper than the one on my Dana 35, but wasn't sure. I jacked the thing up and I think...

    Death Wobble?

I was driving down a highway at about 65 MPH this evening and when I went around a corner, it felt like I was driving over a washboard. The front tires felt like they were leaving the ground. I added a two inch lift this weekend (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=927683) and I'm...

    Lifted

Installed my lift this weekend - might be the hardest I've ever worked in 110 degree heat! I was fortunate that none of the bolts broke and none of the captive nuts broke free. BTW, there is a company local to me that custom bends U-bolts. I was able to upgrade to 1/2 inch U-bolts on the rear...

    Wahoo! A/C!

I wanted to drop a "thank you" to all who post their experience and suggestions to the NAXJA forum. I was able to find enough information in past posts to resurrect my A/C (which is almost a necessity in Arkansas). NAXJA saves the day (and my wallet) again!

    Passanger Window

Back Story: While at ARRL Field Day this weekend, my friend rolled my passenger window all the way down. Since the mechanism to roll the window up and down is shot, we couldn't put it back up. This has happened once before and I was able to use pliers to pull the window up to the point that...

Some pics from my last off-road adventure

My XJ is stock as far as drivetrain is concerned. It's incredible what these things will do "out of the box"! Click on the thumbnail to get the full-size pic:

    Steering Column Frustration

I have to say that I'm thoroughly disgusted with the engineer at GM who designed the steering column. It took me at least two hours to get into the thing to fix my blinker self-cancel and headlight high-low beam switch. Apparently I jiggled another wire, so I get to climb back into it to try...

    Tranny Sin

I replaced the fluid in my transmission with ATF+4 before reading about people having problems with it on this site. I ran it for about two days before draining it and replacing with DEXRON III. My transmission seems to be a bit "loose" and clunks around a bit while shifting (especially...

    Cruise Control

I have what appears to be cruise control under the hood on my Cherokee, but the previous owner messed with the steering column (put in a multifunction switch from a Toyota) and the cruise doesn't work. What are the components for cruise in an '87 and where would I look to make sure they are all...

    Mounting an Amateur Radio

I'm trying to figure out the best place to mount my 2M rig in the '87 XJ. Any suggestions? Has anyone successfully mounted in the center console in front of the shitfer (below the ash tray)? Not sure if there's enough room there...

    Using 4WD

I'm a little embarrased to have to ask this, but I bought my XJ less than a month ago and I didn't get a manual, so what is the proper way to engage and disengage 4wd? I've been able to get into 4-hi by rolling along at about 5 MPH and pulling into 4-hi. I can drop it back into 2-hi at any...
