x2 on the park pawl. The edges of the pawl can wear down over time and become rounded (not grab), springs can break or weaken. It is also possible that the shift cable is a little out of adjustment (cable stretches over time).
In general, the NP231, NV231 and 231J (J for Jeep) are all the same transfer case. There is a 231HD (heavy duty) and a 231C (Chevy) as well. There is a small round metal tag on the back of the case that has specific model and serial numbers. Now for the tricky parts - the clocking (rotation)...
