    Jeep won't go in reverse?

    Here's a good write-up on swapping AW4s from different years: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1053970

Rocky and I had round one today...

I have a '95 YJ 4 banger and I experienced the exact same problems. Kastein's advice is on target (as usual). Check/clean the grounds and wiggle the harnesses. My problem turned out to be the wire harness connector that plugs onto the coil. I took some pliers and squeezed the 2 female...

97 XJ 4x4, 4.0. Weird noise in reverse only.

x2 on the park pawl. The edges of the pawl can wear down over time and become rounded (not grab), springs can break or weaken. It is also possible that the shift cable is a little out of adjustment (cable stretches over time).

    transfercase help

In general, the NP231, NV231 and 231J (J for Jeep) are all the same transfer case. There is a 231HD (heavy duty) and a 231C (Chevy) as well. There is a small round metal tag on the back of the case that has specific model and serial numbers. Now for the tricky parts - the clocking (rotation)...

    Tire question for on-road use.

Not sure what part of Cali that you drive through. Do you ever drive on snow or ice? That is an important consideration when buying tires.

    Auto Transmission Swap Compatibility

Just for clarity, did you use the original torque converter or the "new" one off the 2000 tranny? I'm having a similar no go issue with a 96.

    Axle WMS difference

    There are a bunch of Ford 9" widths available on stock vehicles, depending on make and year. Look for a 31 spline variant. Here's a chart for Bronco's and Pickups: WMS to WMS 57-72 F-100 Pickup - 61 1/4" 73-86 F-150 Pickup and 78-86 Bronco - 65-65 1/4" 66-77 Bronco - 58"

    More rear end mysteries.

Howling is usually bearing noise. From FSM: The axle shaft, differential and pinion gear bearings can all produce noise when worn or damaged. Bearing noise can be either a whining, or a growling sound. Pinion gear bearings have a constant-pitch noise. This noise changes only with vehicle...

    Question on selling

My experience has been that you can get more money out of a vehicle by parting it out - if you're willing to hold out for what the parts are worth, if you're willing to do the wrenching yourself, and if you're willing to deal with all the low ballers and people that have no idea what parts they...

    what axle do i have?

The low pinion D30s on the 00 and 01 XJs are the same front axle used on the TJ Wranglers (with the exception of Rubicons that used a D44/D30 hybrid). The high pinion version is stronger because the reverse cut pushes the ring and pinion together instead of pushing the pinion away from the ring...

Special ways to test OEM Jeep stuff thread

    1) Some gremlins can traced to bad wire harness connectors. I found a bad coil connector on non-XJ jeep (OK I have a YJ too) by wiggling wires until I got the motor to miss. 2) Always check and clean your grounds early in the diagnosic process (right after fuses). 3) Of course, there's the swap...

    what axle do i have?

"From the factory your 1998 would have come with a chrysler 8.25 rear and Dana 30 front" This is not always true - 1998 models with ABS used the Dana 35. If the axle has flat webbing across the bottom, it's an 8.25. Kastein really knows his stuff...

    Differences between a 93 and 94 XJ?

The major components (engine, auto transmission, axles, transfer) can be swapped. Jeep has parts lists that cover '91-'93 and '94-96 XJs so there are some differences, but as you are probably aware, the 1996 has many differences from the 91-95s (e.g., ODB 2). I know that the manual trans...
