Did you get your gears installed at a shop? If so, take it back.
Noise usually means they weren't installed properly. (backlash, pinion depth, ect.)

my friend that does rear ends did it. I'll have him take a look then.

Should have pulled a pattern before removing the 4.10's,thats the only way to even come close to re-installing used gears in another housing. What axle are we talking about?Does sound like pinion bearings though!

Its the C8.25

You're friend dorked up the job. Even used gears shouldn't sound that bad. Have him check the pattern on the gears again.

What's with the check engine light?

I just converted it to 4wd but used an np231 from an 89. As a result, the tail cone on the 231 is cable driven so my speedometer isnt working right now.

Ya I wanted to do that but unfortunately the gears were already pulled. Whats weird is the pinion seal is leaking also. I got a Master install kit for it. I was there when he installed them, and checked the pattern. It looked good. But I'll check again!

When you drive it back try to avoid making that noise, when you hear that, bad stuff is happening
what exactly is happening though. Ive driven it about 300 miles like this. What would cause it to make that noise with the clutch in at high speeds?

checked my axles book for reference, seems like you have too much backlash.
Best to have your friend re-check it, and have him re-check the torque on all bolts.

I was also leaning to the torque. He's putting the 4:10's in my d30 tomorrow so ill have him tear into the rear end also.
